torre.jpgBreaking news within the last hour..

Peter Abraham of the Journal News is reporting that Joe Torre is going to be hired as Dodgers manager as soon as TODAY. (Edit: Rotoworld is now running with this story too. Thanks, Torgy!)

This is unconfirmed, of course. If this turns out to be true, I'll delve deeper into my thoughts on how Torre would do as manager of the Blue, but I just wanted to get this up as soon as possible.

And might I say? WOW. I honestly never gave this a shot in hell of happening. Maybe the Girardi rumors were actually accurate about him being bench coach if he didn't get the Yankees job - except he wouldn't be bench coach for Griddle, he'd be bench coach for Torre.

The link also states that Don Mattingly, who just quit the Yankees after not getting the manager gig, would come with. Growing up in NJ in the 80s, despite not being a Yankees fan, I was always a HUGE Mattingly fan. How could you not be? Talk about playing the game the right way. Plus, if you don't know, LA drafted his son Preston in the first round last year. Sure, Preston sucked in the minors in his debut. But still.

More to come. Including whether this rumor is BS or not. But still. Whoa.

God bless you, MSTI, I just about laughed up a lung. Let's just hope that Torre can spread the wealth, I am sure that Proctor would hope so, although I don't remember Griddle taking it easy on him, either.

I remember the brawl that Proctor had I think it was with the Mariners, right? Do Proctor and Torre not get along?

MSTI, I watched the same Griddle you did all season. No matter how you slice it, Joe Torre (AND Mattingly!!) is a major upgrade. And if it gets us in pole position for A-Rod -- God Bless America! This is Los Angeles for crying out loud!! This team can afford to spend 160 million bucks to field a team. We can afford to promise A-Rod the world. We just drew 3.5 million fans in a season where we did a swan dive right when we were supposed to be ramping up for the playoff run. The Dodgers are right there with the Yankees & Red Sox in spending power -- on top of the fact that we all know our scouts and our farm system runs laps around both of those franchises. A-Rod would make us an instant contender. Everybody "buys" pennants, on the way to "buying" a championship. FLorida did it. New York did. Hell, BOSTON just did it. But those teams still had to play. They still had to go out there every damn day and get the job done. I can cheer for that team. Can you?

Plus, A-Rod instantly makes all of our young guys that much more valuable. A-Rod hitting between Kemp and Ethier? Are you kidding me?? We get Kemp seeing fastballs all season long he's going to hit 45 homers a year. I know you love the young guys, I know you have high hopes for La Roche. But the rule of thumb is win now. Sorry Andy, if that means we can get a perennial MVP at 3rd Base -- we need to pull the trigger. The Dodgers are not that far away. You know it -- we were close this year until about Mid August when the wheels came off. But, We have an ace. We have an ace in the making. We have a bullpen that's going to be better next year. We have young talent everywhere, a solid veteran at shortstop, and a perennial all star behind the plate (Also -- Torre is a catcher. Think about how many more seasons we get out of Martin with this move. You know Torre will MAKE him take days off.) Then, maybe, we get the howitzer, A-Rod, -- and we could compete for World Series titles in -- at least -- the next 3 to 4 years. COMPETE. Play in the NLCS. A return to glory. After 20 years without even sniffing a pennant, we have to take that chance. We have to.

The NYT is declaring it a done deal.

MSTI, you should get a different picture of Torre to accompany your Torre stories. The neanderthal eye ridges just give me the creeps.
