Blanton would insure that we have 5 starters above the league average at each slot. We probably already have that, but Blanton would insure that. It would also give us Derek Lowe walk insurance for 09. Of course, by 09 Kershaw, Elbert and McDonald could be ML ready. Who knows? Greg Miller too? But you can't count on all of them. Then Penny can walk the following year, right? Man, it'd be nice if we had a slugging prospect in the minors as well, but hopefully Kemp/Loney/LaRoche have a good balance of mashing/avg. So ya, not actually worried about that. My bad.

I have this feeling that Troy Renck is working for Billy Beane to raise the ante on Blanton. Involving the Dodgers and their rich farm system will always get results. Look what it did for the O's and Bedard, the M's gave up the house for a lefty who has never thrown 200 innings and could walk in two years.

Signing Livan to a minor league deal is a zero risk deal. If Schmidt, Guo and Loaiza aren't able to answer the bell, Cheeseburger gives us a veteran arm for the short term, but giving him a guaranteed ML contract is bordering on signing Juan Pierre for five years at $9 million per year....

Penny
Lowe
Billz
Kuroda
Schmidt
Loaiza
Guo
--------
I count 7 pitchers for 5 spots. With Stults in AAA and Kershaw for a late season callup or a 2009 starter. I don't see any reason for Joe Blanton unless the Dodgers are planning on trading one of the seven pitchers listed above. I think they would be better of signing some NRI to a minor league contract, keeping him at AAA if they want extra insurance. We all know that Schmidt and Guo are questionable due to past injuries, but what happens if they are both ready to pitch early in the season?
