Ah, the kind of post I used to write about three years ago when I had more fire in the belly, or whatever the cliché-du-jour is. Joe Torre's charge is keeping the press off his players' backs (and thus, to some degree, his own and that of the organization), so his mastery of the art of duckspeak is hardly a surprise. Any sufficiently polished manager will have this skill.

The real problem arises when said manager starts deploying his team according something akin to his nonce speeches, valuing the "professional at-bats" of guys like Andruw Jones and Mark Sweeney ahead of possibly better guys in whom the team has a lesser salary investment. Not that I'm saying this wasn't worth getting in a high dudgeon about, but it seems to me that the biggest problem the Dodgers have faced this year is the surprising and all-but-universal collapse of the position-playing kids (James Loney and Matt Kemp in particular); declines by the likes of Kent, Jones, Garciaparra, and were predictable, but some of that could have been made up for by solid years from the prior two.

It's funny you mention Sabathia's bat - after he got traded the other day, I asked a group of mostly non-Dodger fan baseball friends, "now that CC's in the NL, who has more homers the rest of the year; CC or Jones?" The response was sadly split.

Thanks for the kind words!

One of the best MSTI posts ever. "I want to take it out behind the middle school and get it pregnant." This line literally brought tears to my eyes (tears of joy), while the news of Mark Sweeney returning brought tears of pain. I think in the best interest of the league Selig should go ahead and ban Sweeney and Jones from baseball for crimes against America's pastime. Seriously there brutal play has to be considered an act of treason.

Maybe we should have traded for Sabathia, we could use his bat in the lineup.
