  1. The “improbables” in this season continue to add up… along with the NINE walkoff wins this year…
    – The Dodgers remain the best team in MLB during the entire duration of Manny’s suspension
    – Juan Pierre is arguably the team’s MVP during the suspension
    – Randy Wolf can’t win OR lose a game to save his life (11 no decisions now)
    – The Blue continues to win despite sub-par years at the plate from usual sparkplugs Martin & Furcal
    – Considered the worst division in MLB before the season, the NL West is quite possibly the best division in the NL, with the best young talent in the league — and along with the Dodgers, the Giants and Rocks on top of the wildcard race at this point.
Okay, so this list looked a lot sexier in my head than it does online… but it’s still the point that most of us could only HOPE the Dodgers would still be playing this well with just days to go before they get Manny back in the lineup.
    Looking forward to Friday…

  3. I can’t get over how the ad banner that asks “Does Your Team Suck?” features a guy who is a dead ringer for Jeff Kent without the mustache. I just love how the arrival of Manny changed the entire culture of the team’s clubhouse, shoving Grumpy to the side. We still have the Plaschke douchetool writing negative articles about how he is disappointed that Manny still gets adulation from the fans, but it’s like he’s shouting from the street corner and nobody is paying any attention. Now that the tool doesn’t have Kent as a source for all his negative articles about “the kids” and how they don’t display the “professionalism” of valuable veterans like Kent, Gonzalez, and Sweeney, we only have to put up with his shock and surprise articles about Manny. And that’s a good thing.
Of course, the next thing we’ll see is the tool’s lament that Pierre is headed for the bench, and his speculation that Kemp or Ethier should be traded for a proven veteran starter like Washburn.

  4. That game was a great win and it just amazes me of how much Andre Ethier looks like my friend.
Dodgers will no doubt win the West and I see them making a trade for a legit pitcher before the deadline, but won’t give up anybody big. I wonder how the Dodgers are going to welcome back Manny? A party, maybe?

  5. Here’s the deal regarding trading for a starter: if you go after an ace like Halladay, you have to give up Kershaw and either Kemp or Ethier, plus a decent minor league prospect or two.
Going after a merely solid starter (i.e. Washburn) to be an upgrade at the 5th spot doesn’t make any sense. The Dodgers are going to win the division, so there’s no need to trade for a 5th starter.
Therefore, the only reason to acquire an ace would be to have that ace for the postseason. However, how much would you weaken your team if you acquired that ace? You’re giving up a lot of hitting by trading away Ethier, if you trade Kemp then you’re giving up some hitting plus a lot of defense at an important position, and if you trade Kershaw and another prospect you’re hurting your team’s future.
Plus, all of these players you’re giving up are pretty cheap for your payroll, while the ace you’re acquiring takes up a good chunk of the payroll. So, that could make it harder to keep another one of your young guys down the road, and it could also hurt your chances of signing a worthy free agent to fill a future hole.
So, I say “meh” on making a trade for a starting pitcher. I think throwing one of Stults/Milton/McDonald/Schmidt out there as the 5th starter won’t hurt the team’s chances of winning the division, and our top four starters will do just fine in the playoffs.
