August 31, 2009 at 9:40 pm | Posted in Jim Thome, Jon Garland | 11 Comments
The analysis will come later, and we’re not sure yet who was involved in the deals, but just to getthe news up, according to MLBTR, the Dodgers have just acquired Jim Thome from the Chicago White Sox and Jon Garland from the team we’re trying to beat, as we speak.
No, those moves weren’t shocking, were they?

Now thats the bad we need off the bench!

Interested to see what your guys take on Thome is: a DH from the AL on an NL team? Just an off the bench pinch hitter and occasional stand in for James Loney? Is Loney underperforming enough to justify putting him on the bench and trotting out a guy who hasn’t played 1B day-to-day in years? Alternatives?

Stephen – Yeah, he’s a “DH from the AL on an NL team” (where else would he DH??), but it’s not as if Thome hasn’t had success in the NL before. Not to mention, if he is just a big LH bat off the bench, it’s no different then DHing…off the bench and to the plate for your AB. Playing in the field? That’s a different story all in itself.

Thome: now we don’t have to spell Mientkiewicz anymore!
Garland: better than Padilla! And life with Haeger is always rolling the dice and living on the edge. Will that knuckler knuckle? An insurance for Bills or Kuroda.
Can’t be too disappointed!

Belliard > Loretta
Thome > Mientkiewicz
Garland > Padilla

I was super hyped up about Thome at first, until I read he can’t play 1B anymore. I’m still happy, but not like I was at first.

I’m definitely stoked about getting Thome. Think about our (not to jump the gun) World Series lineup when we’re in the AL city.
Furcal
Kemp
Ethier
Manny
Thome
Blake
Loney
Martin
Hudson
Not to mention the fact that Thome can very well go Matt Stairs on someone this postseason.
I’m not as happy about Garland, unless we lose Padilla. We can’t send Haegar down without the chance of losing him, and Padilla cost us nothing to get in the first place, so just let him go. But… this is much worse if it ends up being Tony Abreu, but only because it’s in-division and it will suck if he ends up raking for the Snakes.
All in all, well done Ned.

Im not advocating Thome at 1B, but when a guy immediately becomes your teams 2nd best power hitter (HR total wise), here’s guessing he does some daily work at 1B to see if we can get him in there from time to time.

Wow, that’s crazy. I know I sure didn’t see that coming. I’ve been a Thome fan since he came up. I know he can’t play much first but it’ll be cool when he can, and PH. Beast Mode just saw his at-bats halved, too.
