But when someone as good as Lincecum doesn’t have his best stuff, that’s still pretty damned good. The whole point of any stat is to measure performance. Wins measure the performance of the combined effort of the starting pitcher, relief pitcher, offense, and defense. There’s too many other factors in there to use them as a judge for the starting pitcher.

I still disagree that wins are irrelevant – overrated sometimes, but not irrelevant. Certain pitchers, say Tim Lincecum, somehow manage to win even when they don’t have their best stuff. Others, say Matt Cain, manage to lose even when they have their best stuff. It’s not just run support that makes the difference.

Wins should be done away with as a stat in my lifetime. Imagine if they was an offensive stat for scoring the game deciding run, that would be equal the redundancy of wins.

Wins are a measure of how well the team performed. They’re a great stat for measuring how good a team is, but they have absolutely no bearing on how well a pitcher performed.

As a statistic, wins can be misleading for a pitcher, but they are not pointless. They are the whole point of the game.

Gomes is going to get more cash than the Dodgers want to put up, even if the Pierre situation is resolved (Pierre traded for cash or to fill another need like a back-of-the-rotation starter).

Garko I would guess the same as well as most of the top flight bench players/borderline starters available this off-season.

If Kelly Johnson can indeed play the OF as well I think he’s worth a flier depending on the price.

Add Matt Capps to the list. Middle relief material that can go multiple innings. I don’t think we’d get him for cheap though. I think I’d rather have him than Guillermo Mota.

Atkins might be a fit with the Orioles, and if not for the Rangers wanting Lowell for some ungodly reason, they would fit as well. Seriously, if the Rangers want to compete, why aid the Redsox in opening up third for Beltre?
