Dodgers of the Decade: Right Field
January 2, 2010 at 1:14 pm | Posted in Andre Ethier, J.D. Drew, Shawn Green | 17 CommentsTo absolutely no one’s surprise, Matt Kemp crushed the center field competition, winning 94% of the vote in what is by far the biggest romp so far. And there I thought Tom Goodwin really had a chance! Oddly enough, each of the other 8 guys got at least one vote.
Dodgers of the Decade team:
C: Russell Martin (68%)
1B: James Loney (62%)
2B: Jeff Kent (88%)
3B: Adrian Beltre (80%)
SS: Rafael Furcal (87%)
LF: Gary Sheffield (62%)
CF: Matt Kemp (94%)
Today is right field, and here’s a battle which I think is going to be extremely interesting. Will people go with their hearts and vote for Andre Ethier, who provided so many great moments in 2009? Shawn Green, who had some huge years in the early part of the decade? Or J.D. Drew, who despite being unpopular had the highest OBP and OPS of all three – and a better season than Ethier ever did?
Right Field
Shawn Green (798 games, 2000-04)
Dodger stats: .280/.366/.510 .876 162 hr 509 rbi
WAR: 18.9
Andre Ethier (580 games, 2006-09)
Dodger stats: .291/.363/.490 .853 75 hr 302 rbi
WAR: 8.7
J.D Drew (218 games, 2005-06)
Dodger stats: .284/.399/.505 .905 35 hr 136rbi
WAR: 6.4
Top three seasons
7.1 WAR Green, 2001
6.9 WAR Green, 2002
3.8 WAR Drew, 2006
The Dodgers may have had their issues at a lot of positions this decade, but you certainly can’t say that about right field, because all three of these guys are outstanding. It’d look even better if I’d included the 4th man who played 100 games in right field, Matt Kemp.
Who rounds out the starting lineup of the decade?

Ethier has a shot at being the right fielder of the next decade, but for this one Shawn Green gets my vote.

Agreed.
Now the challenge for the Dodger Front Office is to hang on to this young core of potentially fine players (I also think Joe Torre is just the right kind of manager for such a group). Here’s hoping…

As much as I love Dre, I give my vote to Shawn Green. Green had some great years. Maybe it’s just me, but Shawn Green seemed so mediocre after Gary Sheffield was traded.

you were right Cabell… he became mediocre after Sheffield left. Still remember his game in Milwaukee…. did he hit the crap out of the ball that day

I remember waking up early that day, I believe it was a 10am start (hey, I was in college), and finding out that the game wasn’t televised. Anyway, I went back to sleep and only got to see the replays of it.

I saw Shawn Green mash a dinger at a home day game following his monster 4 homer game. Sitting in the right field pavillion I stood up on the bench seat and applauded him as he took his position the next inning. The crowd around me soon followed suit and joined in. Shawn actually acknowledged the pavillion fans as we cheered loudly for him. Though he didn’t tip his cap, he did raise his glove as he turned around towards us. One memorable day for me at The Ravine, and I privately take credit for the outfield ovation that day. =D

These guys have all put up great numbers, but Green throwing his batting gloves to kids behind the dugout after every home run sticks in my memory. Drew had the opposite effect as a Dodger…his opting out may be one thing we’ll point back at as the catalyst for all the bad moves for the Dodgers. If Ethier can continue to produce and the team can hold onto him, he’ll by far outshine the other two as a Dodger. Dre is an exciting player to watch…hopefully he can remain in blue for years to come.

I love Ethier, but I have to remember the love I had for Shawn Green when I was young. He was my favorite of the early decade, and Ethier’s my favorite right now. Still, my vote goes to Green. And JD Drew can suck it.
