Could the Yankees Still Trade For Ted Lilly?
September 1, 2010 at 9:59 am | Posted in Ted Lilly | 38 Comments
So, here’s a thing. Even though the August 31 deadline has passed to have players be eligible for the postseason roster, the Yankees believe they could still trade for Ted Lilly and have him be eligible.
Even though the deal could happen Wednesday or later, the Yankees believe there is a loophole that because they were awarded the claim before the first of the month, they could use Lilly on their postseason roster.
Now, let me caution: I have no idea if this is true or not, and I’ve never heard of such a thing. I’ll try to do some research today to find out. But if it is true, then there’s still time to rectify the mistakes of yesterday. Make it happen!

Buster Olney is saying that Lilly & the Dodgers are mutually looking at a multi-year extension. Probably not the same number of years, but close to the same salary as his currently ending 4/$40 deal. Apparently, he wanted to sign with LA when he signed his current deal, but we went after Schmidt-head instead.
Comment by Gibby's Limp— September 1, 2010 #
That’s going to be interesting. He’s a good pitcher, but nowhere near as good as what he’s shown in LA (his last start aside.)
Comment by Mike Scioscia's tragic illness— September 1, 2010 #
Given that we have to fill three spots in the rotation, Lilly would be a welcome addition. Fills in the 2nd or 3rd spot nicely. We could do worse.
Comment by Juan Pierre— September 1, 2010 #
Even if he regresses to the mean, as you’ve said he will (and I agree), wouldn’t he at least be a good #4 or #5 starter? Although – and I guess I’m talking myself out of my initial thought as I type – $10 million per year seems really expensive for that. Is the real Ted Lilly good enough to be the future #3 guy behind Bills and Kershaw? I’m not sure his performance before coming to LA really was up to that level.
Comment by Steve— September 1, 2010 #
But who is? Have you got a candidate waiting who’ll be in the $10 million range and still look like a credible 3 or 4?
Comment by Bill Grabarkewitz— September 1, 2010 #
10 million can get any team good pitcher.
For instance the Giants pay Lencecum 9 million, Cain 4 million, sanchez 2.1 and Zito (LOL) 18 miliion.
Ubaldo makes 1.2,DeLaRosa 5.6, and street 7million.
Tha Padres don’tpay any pitcher overr 4million. The Dodgers can get solid pitching for 10 million.
Comment by Adonis— September 1, 2010 #
Adonis, I think you’ve proven you don’t quite understand how salaries in baseball work. You don’t think guys like Lincecum, Cain, and Ubaldo would get a TON more than that if they were free agents? They’re not. They’re under team control, so their leverage is limited. That wouldn’t be the case for guys the Dodgers go after.
Comment by Mike Scioscia's tragic illness— September 1, 2010 #
MSTI,
I think in many of your posts you have proven over and over agian that you have never played baseball at the highest level, but I have never held that agianst you. The Giants got their staff and the current salaries of Timmy Bong-game and Matt Cain in arbitration. The Dodgers have let many decent pitchers go in the past few seasons by not offering or chosing arbitration. Even a bench warmer like you knows the Padres got thier pitching staff, all under 4 million by signing them as free agents. Thanks for telling me what I don’t know.
Comment by Adonis— September 1, 2010 #
Oh yeah? Mat Latos was a free agent? Clayton Richard? Wade LeBlanc? I think you need to do more research, friend.
Comment by Mike Scioscia's tragic illness— September 1, 2010 #
Come on man. You named a few pitchers who “were under team control”. I named a few very good pitchers (pitched good this year at least)for the Pads/Giants who were picked up as free agents and or signed by arbitration all for under the 10 million mark. The Dodgers can get solid pitchers for 10 million a year. BTW I think Ned has proven he really doesn’t break the bank to sign star pitchers. I think the Jason Schmidt ordeal has him a bit gun shy.
Comment by Adonis— September 2, 2010 #
You didn’t, though. “Under team control” or “signed by arbitration” are basically the same thing. There’s no way Ubaldo would get just $1.2m were he a free agent.
Comment by Mike Scioscia's tragic illness— September 2, 2010 #
You have got to be kidding me, Adonis. It has became overwhelmingly obvious that you have no clue how baseball salaries work.
Were you aware that we to could go to arbitration with Lilly after this season? That if we do go to arbitration with him that he would most likely get a RAISE from what he made this year considering they rarely make veteran players take pay cuts?
Then for you to bring out the, “never played baseball at a high level” argument after you were called out is ludicrous.
Comment by Jarky— September 2, 2010 #
Raise your hand if you have actually signed a major league free agent contract. MSTI and Jarky keep your hand down. I have lived what you guys comment and speculate on. Granted the rules have changed from 100 years ago, but the orginal comment by Steve was asking who could the Dodgers get as basically a 4th/5th starter for ten million a year during the off season. For that price the Giants got Lencecum with arbitration. The Pads did that and actually signed decent FREE AGENT pitchers for LESS. I feel and posted that getting a solid 4th/5th pitcher as a free agent for around the 10 million mark a year is easily possible. A baseball geek who as you think “called me out” was not willing to admit that. I have remained consistent that I feel Lilly/Kuroda and a few others position should have been traded long ago. Ubaldo would get far more than 1.2 million in the free agent market but the Rockies will be smart and offer salary arbitration and get him close to the 10 million amount per year. The ludicrous logic is actually thinking that everything MSTI writes is a fact and 100% above criticism.
Comment by Adonis— September 2, 2010 #
Just because you’ve signed a contract (and if you have, please back that up) doesn’t mean you automatically understand economics any better.
Remember, players are the ones who bemoaned the breakup of the vaunted 2008 Pirate team that lost 90+ games.
Comment by Mike Scioscia's tragic illness— September 2, 2010 #
Back that up to you? Why? Young man I proved myself in baseball long before you and your groupies were ripping people for not agreeing with you. Even with my own out-dated understanding of pro baseball’s salary situation I think we can solve this “debate.” Answer a simple question. Can the Dodgers get any free agent starting pitchers during the off season that could hold down the 4th/5th spots for under ten million per year? If you say no then we disagree. If you say yes then we agree.
Comment by Adonis— September 2, 2010 #
Yes, they could. But you used irrelevant facts (who cares what Lincecum makes? it makes no difference to the Dodgers) to prove your point.
And if you’re unable to provide any sort of factual information to a simple question asking you about your playing history, then I’ll have to take it as not being truthful.
Comment by Mike Scioscia's tragic illness— September 2, 2010 #
I totally agree. Lilly is decent but I just don’t like that he is a comfortable at bat. If the Dodgers sign him I hope it is for two years tops. Manny’s interview where he said it is nice now being in a playoff race reminded me why I don’t get caught up with individual players. Manny forgot to mention to ESPN that the Dodgers are out of the NL race in part because he could not run from here to there without getting hurt.

MSTI-I too have signed a big league contract! sure I have with the dodgers! if you believe that one then the dodgers this season are poised to make a run at the division title and go all the way this year, led by feared slugger Scotty Podsednik!
just hilarity! I love it!

Maddux got $10 million per over his last 2 or 3 seasons, so I don’t think that figure is over the line for a guy like Lilly. Plus, Randy Wolf, the player that Lilly theoretically replaces (a year later) is making about $9 million per year in Milwuakee.
Maddux

I know that I’m living in a dream world, but the thought of bringing back the entire staff for next year would be is sick…and could be done considering the fairly short term deals that Lilly, Kuroda, and Padilla will be offered.
1. Kershaw
2. Bills
3. Kuroda
4. Lilly
5. Padilla
I’m thinking somewhere in the 2/$20MM range for Kuroda and another 1/$8 for Padilla (possibly with an $8MM option vesting should he pitch 170 innings.)
Comment by The Cannon— September 1, 2010 #
Dude… You said it… Dream World.
Kuroda is going back to Japan after the season. Mark it down.
Padilla is gone for sure.
Obviously, Lilly likes LA and LA likes him. I can see him in the rotation. Ned goes after another starter, and they give the young guys (much like you saw this season) a chance to fill the void in the 5 spot.
Bigger concern is the bullpen. What do we have with Broxton now? Is he a closer or a setup guy? Can he learn how to throw a changeup? Hell, as much as I would stand in line to piss on Trevor Hoffman’s grave, it would be nice to get him into Spring Training, if for no other reason to cuddle Big John and teach him how to throw that wicked changeup. Sherill is gone. Dotel is gone. Kuo stays. Weaver gone… or stays. And then, who knows with the Divorce crap, if Ned’s still going to get handcuffed by McCourt.

yeah that Adonis guy is completly clueless. but is funny to see MSTI take him to school! MSTI please dont ban him yet and continue driving the bus. its great entertainment!

LOL. You admitted that yes the Dodgers could sign decent pitchers for under 10 million. That is not what you indicated before. Do you always argue with yourself like this? The lenceum We agree on one thing that your groupies don’t and that is “I have not been offensive.” Why would I need to be offensive to a bunch of runt geeks who have never played the game? Give me your personal e-mail and I will fill in the blanks on my basbeall history. When will you be asking your groupies with net names such as format, King and the rest to share their private information to all?
Comment by Adonis— September 2, 2010 #
Adonis-just because you played a year of highschool varsity baseball doesnt mean that you know more or understand the game any better than anyone else.
you have clearly showed that you DONT know anymore than anyone else. you do know that the only free agent starter the Padres signed this year was Jon Garland. Pitchers who are not under team control and who are free agents would command alot more money on the market. If your claiming you have signed a Major League contract, then let us know what level you have played at. Otherwise you are nothing than an Al Bundy-”I played a little highschool ball”
Comment by format— September 2, 2010 #
I love Al Bundy……. Gosh I wish I could have made my high school team.LOL. I disagreed with your hero and now you chime in? Chivalry must be alive. What I do know is that your buddy/hero/partner indicated that I was foolish to think that pitchers can be signed as free agents for 10 million or less. You are the second perosn wanting my personal information. I didn’t know that this was also a dating website but I will share some of my baseball history. I signed an amateur free agent contract with the Pirates (Pete Jones signed my contract )in the mid 80’s after turning down a previous draft and contract offer by the Phillies. I played high Double AA ball with some success but sucked at hitting a slider. I played alongside and vs many great players. I left (mistake) to play division I college football as a WR. I Married an LA girl who insisted on me liking the Dodgers (after finished playing I never really cared about any team) Now that my private life story is out there what is yours and MSTI? I do still wish to be educated on baseball by many of you.
Comment by Adonis— September 2, 2010 #
What would really interest me is learning where you could play “low” Double A ball.
Comment by Mike— September 3, 2010 #
Just because someone played, doesn’t mean they are Casey Stengel, or they are a good fit for the front office…………..i like how you won a college football National title too……….you sure you’re not one of the trolls from Dodgers.com?
Comment by DodgersKings323— September 2, 2010 #
Just because someone didn’t play baseball and only sees basbeall with a lens of crunching numbers/stats does not make them a wise internet GM no matter how many groupie followers they may have. I never once said or wrote I won a national college football title. Resorting to that tactic now? Mr.Mike one could be playing “low” AA ball by playing in an independent AA league. Double AA teams play in double AA leagues but often compete vs “low” AA independent teams. It’s ben fun geeks.
Comment by Adonis— September 3, 2010 #
Where and when do Major League affiliated AA teams play against Independent league teams? Multiple choice:
1. Never
2. Never
3. Never

Mike. Is that a new thing because 100 years ago it happened far more frequently than never.
Comment by Adonis— September 3, 2010 #
Lots of things happened 100 years ago that don’t happen now, but I can guarantee with virtual certainty that unless there was some one-off game somewhere that a MLB affiliate AA team from the Texas, Eastern or Southern Leagues has not played a regularly scheduled game against an independent league team in at least 30 years.
