Clayton Kershaw & Ted Lilly Discuss the Phillies Lineup

August 9, 2011 at 8:43 am | Posted in Clayton Kershaw, Ted Lilly | 24 Comments

The official Dodger Twitter feed brings us this picture of Clayton Kershaw and Ted Lilly going over scouting reports, with the caption, “Ted Lilly, who gets the start tonight on Duke Snider Night, goes over the Phils w/ Clayton Kershaw”.

Somehow, I imagine the conversation went a little differently.

Kershaw: First, they have Jimmy Rollins. He’s not what he once was, but still dangerous, so be careful with him.

Lilly: /allows homer

Kershaw: Shane Victorino is next, if he’s not suspended. He’s kind of an asshole. It’d be best to get him out so there’s not men on base for Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Hunter Pence, but if you wanted to hit him in the face, I don’t think any of us would have a problem with it.

Lilly: /attempts to bean Victorino, allows homer

Kershaw: The meat of the Phillies lineup – Utley, Howard, and Pence – is among the most dangerous trios in the game. You can’t let them beat you. Fortunately, Utley and Howard are both lefties, so that should help out a couple of southpaws like us, right?

Lilly: /inexplicably strikes out both Howard and Utley, allows line drive single to Pence.

Kershaw: Pence hasn’t been running as often this…

Lilly: /Pence steals second

Kershaw: year as he has in years past…

Lilly: /Pence steals third

Kershaw: but you’ll still want to keep an eye on him.

Lilly: /Pence steals home.

Kershaw: Uh, okay. Well, at least now you have the dessicated corpse of Raul Ibanez, who is hitting just .240/.287/.419 overall, and even worse (.215 BA, .241 OBP) against lefties. No problem right?

Lilly: /induces Ibanez to hit a soft tapper back to the mound, which Lilly promptly launches into the stands behind first base.

Kershaw: Fantastic. This is a problem, because Carlos Ruiz is up, and he always kills the Dodg-

Lilly: /allows two-run homer

Kershaw: Well done. With Placido Polanco injured, they’ve been hitting something called a “Michael Martinez” 8th, can you at least handle that?

Lilly: /strikes out Martinez

Kershaw: Tough inning, Ted.

Lilly: What? I struck out the side. We must be losing because I don’t get enough run support.

  1. Lilly will be leading the League in homers before his nite ends…….in the 5th.

  2. That was classic. Co-workers were all giving me the stink eye because I was laughing so hard.

    • …attempts to bean Victorino, allows homer. Bwahahah. (I hate that little b*****d.)

  3. Can we all just take a moment to marvel at the fact that Matt Kemp has 29 stolen bases, 26 HR, and all this without the chance to face Ted Lilly. That must be reflected somewhere in his WAR, right?

  4. Lilly-”Ned signed me because I’m a smart veteran. Let me teach you a few things about pitching, like how to hold runners on and how to keep the ball in the ballpark.”

    Clayton-”Beautiful night, isn’t it Ted?”

Lilly-”You’re just a kid, right? If we hang out, some of my veteran goodness will rub off.”

Clayton-”Have to take a leak, Ted.”

  5. I have two questions for the group. First, did anyone else notice how effectively Halladay pitched our lefties inside last night? Absolutely no fear of being beat by any of them with a long ball. Secondly, at what point can we start putting some of the blame on Barajas/Navarro for all the 2 strike hits the pitchers are giving up. I know that the catcher only suggests the pitch, but if the pitcher has confidence in the catcher I think for the most part he is throwing what the catcher is putting down.

  6. MSTI YOU ARE AMAZING! I WAS LAUGHING SOOOOO HARD! LOL!

  7. Dear MSTI,

This post was the dumbest thing i have ever read! MSTI you are not funny! Stop trying so hard! KTHXBYE

    Love,
    Steve

    • Why are you here?

    • Go Home Roger!

  8. Seeing how Ted Lilly and Clayton are attached at the hip nowadays, you do have to admit that Ted has been a huge positive influence on him. It almost seems like a father son type of thing. I’m not saying he was worth that 3 year contract, but at least he does provide someone to pretty much mentor Kershaw. In all honesty it is probably just for the mental part of the game and for work ethic though.

    • Why do I have to admit that? Kershaw was pretty good before Lilly got here. Not saying it’s flat-out not true, but I don’t know that we can say for certain it IS true, either.

      • I just want to know what happened to Lilly? I mean, geez, he was never great(4.23 lifetime ERA), but his his stats over the past few years were much better than that. I wasn’t thrilled with the 3-year deal to begin with but I thought we’d be getting at least a decent pitcher for our troubles.

I anticipate a moon shot with every pitch he throws…

    • I generally wouldn’t ask for Kershaw to be more like Lilly in any way, but Lilly, even with this bad season is 8th in BB/9. If that and only that could rub off on Kershaw, it would be awesome.

    • And i can credit Sandy Koufax for chatting with him.

  9. You all miss the point, I believe. Lilly has had 4 days between throwing soft toss all year to figure it out. He’s barely effective, and he knows it. So why not sell a new, manufactured value – the crafty veteran, mentoring the Cy Yound in waiting. It’s a can’t lose deal. As already seen in this comment thread, there are people who’ll buy that con in a second, as Kershaw was bound for glory way pre-Ted.

Lilly is not, and has never been Greg Maddox, pitcher/mentor. Lilly also is not, and will never be Clayton Kershaw, pitcher. But Ted knows just where to hitch his wagon.

    • No one has said that any value he has as a mentor justifies his contract.

  10. Oh, what I wouldn’t give to pry CC Sabathia away from the Yankees. Now there’e a mentor for ya.
